Species appropriate breeding of Mandarin Ducks in Upstate NY

Our homested is situated on a large Lakefront Property.

All our birds have not been clipped and have their own large Pond and Aviary as well as 2 covered enclosures to roam and fly around in.

The males start changing color into full colorful feathers mid September until October and we have 4 wood duck houses i n our enclosure where the females can lay and brood on their eggs.

They usually sit on their eggs for about 28 days and within a couple of days of hatching the mum leaves the nest and the chicks jump out of the nest to join her. They are beautiful little fluffs of feathers and a joy to watch grow up.

We feed them high quality organic food only as well as locally caught minnows and herbs and vegetables from our own organic garden. They are regularly dewormed and live with our 2 very social Runner Ducks Pate & Confit. They are used to our 3 dogs running around.

We have 3 adult males and females and this year have 7 juvenile females and 6 juvenile males available for sale. They were born in the first 2 weeks of June. One of our females had 5 chicks and our other 2 females co parented the other 8 chicks.

A couple of things to note:

Our ducks we originally purchased in June at 3 months old and they were in full plumage by the Fall and had chicks in June the next year. If you don’t want offspring, removing of the eggs from the nest as you would other eggs is an option. Mandarin Ducks pick a partner and pair up and are very social birds but can be quite skiddish around people they don’t know.

We don’t clip our birds so before purchasing them please make sure you have an aviary and a big enough pond and enclosure or arrange with your vet to have them clipped. Please check with the DEC in your state, in NY these birds are not allowed to live in the wild.
